New Minimum Wage - 8th July 2008
This afternoon the Australian Fair Pay Commission has handed down its third minimum wage determination - and its first under a Labor Government.
It has awarded an across-the-board wage increase of $21.66 gross per week to all employees on minimum rates.
As a result, the new Federal Minimum Wage will be:
· $543.78 gross per week (up from $522.12); and
· $14.31 gross per hour (up from $13.74).
This wage increase takes effect from the first pay period from 1 October 2008.
Please note, this wage increase only applies to employees employed by ‘Federal employers’ – that is, those employers covered by the Federal workplace relations system. Generally speaking, this includes all employers who are companies (or a Trust with a corporate Trustee). Any employer that is a sole trader, partner or a Trust (with an individual as the Trustee) are covered by the Queensland industrial relations system and only State wage increases apply.
If you are unsure about whether your come within the State or Federal system, you should seek advice so as to ensure you are providing your employees with the relevant minimum wage and entitlements.
